Volume 6 in USK’s In Depth Instructional Video Series
Running Time 208 Minutes
The University of sea kayaking is very excited to announce our latest addition to our “In-Depth” Instructional Video Series. Our new “Essential Kayaking Strokes” video (Volume 6) is now available. This video not only covers the essential strokes a paddler needs to move their kayak, it also focuses on stroke efficiency, while addressing overuse injuries. In addition, we discuss the factors that are important when taking strokes such as: paddle selection, boat selection, endurance levels and the environmental conditions.
In recent years there has been a great push in the paddling community for the use of shorter paddles and using a high angle stroke in the name of efficiency. We believe efficiency is very important, but you also have to take into consideration sustainability when looking at your stroke style. We at USK believe there are many different ways to perform a forward stroke while still using your body efficiently. There are times when performing a touring angle or a low angle stroke is more appropriate than using a high angle stroke. That is why we review the various forward stroke styles available to you. We also discuss the use of wing paddles and Greenland paddles. As a result of the many different forward stroke options available to the paddler, we have introduced our two-paddle philosophy. If a kayaker wants a greater range of performance, then he or she should consider carrying two different paddles, which can provide that versatility.
USK’s Essential Kayaking Strokes video contains 3 hours and 28 minutes of detailed information. Our step-by-step approach to strokes is easily viewed with the 113 chapter stops contained in the DVD. As always, we include a written insert with the entire set of chapter links to help you navigate, aside from the on-screen menus. The main chapter titles are:
Your Boat Combining The 3 B’s Reverse Strokes & Stopping
Your Body Moving A Kayak Turning Strokes
Your Blade Forward Strokes Draw Strokes
We feel we have left no stone unturned with respect to our strokes video. The first half of the video lays a strong foundation for efficient strokes. In addition we thoroughly cover the importance of equipment selection and discuss the causes of overuse injuries. The second half of the video discusses the details of how to perform each stroke. If you are starting out in kayaking this video will provide priceless information. If you are a seasoned paddler, we feel confident you will find lots of useful information that can help you fine-tune your strokes. At present, this is the most comprehensive strokes video available on the market. We are confident it is a resource you will revisit regularly as you develop your strokes or need to refresh your memory if you take a winter break from paddling.
